UNIverse PoliMi App

UNiverse is a UI concept developed during the 6th edition of the Executive Course in User Interface Design by POLI.design. The project explores a possible spin-off application for Politecnico di Milano, designed to support students during the final phase of their academic journey.
The app helps students manage key moments of the thesis process, from choosing a project and supervisor to tracking deadlines, accessing resources and exploring post-graduation opportunities.

Challenge Overview

Supporting students in the final phase of their academic journey

The project focused on the design of a digital service capable of accompanying students through one of the most complex and decisive moments of university life: the transition from academic path to thesis work and professional orientation.

Students were asked to imagine a mobile-first application that could make this process clearer, more structured and easier to navigate. The challenge was to organize different types of information: projects, supervisors, thesis repositories, resources, deadlines and career opportunities into a coherent interface system that could support students without overwhelming them.

Methodology

From visual research to interface language

The design process started with a visual research phase, where students explored references, palettes, typographic directions, iconography and interface solutions. This phase helped define the visual language of the project, leaving room for experimentation while building a coherent direction for the final interface.

The class then worked on moodboards and style explorations, translating the concept into a recognizable identity. The goal was to create an interface that could feel institutional, but also contemporary, accessible and close to students’ everyday digital habits.

Outcomes

A modular UI system built around cards and resources

The final concept is based on a modular interface system designed to organize academic content in a clear and flexible way. A key visual element of the project is the use of folder-style cards, created to evoke the ideas of archive, organization and resource consultation.

This language is applied across different sections of the app, allowing students to browse publications, thesis repositories, available projects, open positions, internships and workshops through a consistent and recognizable system.

Impact

Turning academic complexity into a clearer digital experience

The project allowed students to work on a concrete service scenario, translating UI principles into a complete visual and interaction system. Through the design of cards, navigation patterns, profile views and thesis tracking interfaces, the class explored how interface design can simplify complex information and support users in moments of transition.

The final output shows how a university service can become more than a repository of information: it can act as a digital companion, helping students understand where they are, what they need to do next and which opportunities they can access after graduation.
